‘‘What was all that about?’’ I asked as Frank climbed back into the car.

‘‘Just stirring,’’ Frank said. ‘‘Making a few connections. Maybe Michelle was involved with New Harbour somehow.’’

‘‘We don't know that for sure.’’

‘‘No, but I like winding Holden up. He doesn't show it but he's terrified about the next election. And any contribution I can make to his lack of sleep is okay by me.’’

‘‘So it's personal?’’

‘‘Not particularly. I quite like Holden actually. He's capable and smart. But that New Harbour land should never have been sold to a developer. It should have been left as it is. It's the same old story, you leave one bunch of blokes in power for too long and they start to think they belong there.’’

‘‘Was it Holden's doing that it was sold?’’

‘‘No. But it's landed in his lap. Poor bastard.’’
